Welcome to Broken Arrows Farm
Broken Arrows Farm is a small family run farm in Zuni, VA. Our journey to eating healthier started in 2004. We knew the only way to afford to eat healthier for a family of 6, was to grow it ourselves. So we started out doing it for ourselves, and then had friends that wanted to start buying from us.
From the very beginning, we wanted to do things as naturally as possible. We decided we wanted to raise livestock and grow vegetables by sustainable practices. To find out about Sustainable Agriculture use this link. Broken Arrows Farm specializes in grass-fed only beef, and pastured poultry and eggs. Our livestock never get hormones, steroids, or routine antibiotics.
We raise Angus beef cows on pasture year-round, along with hay that we grow and harvest here on our chemical-free fields. We have a small herd of red and black Angus for our breeding stock. Their diets consist of forage only, no grains. We use rotational grazing practices with the Angus herd. That way, they get a fresh pasture to graze in everyday.
Our laying hens free-range on the same pastures. To keep predators at bay, we use an electrical portable fence along with movable hoop houses for the girls to nest in. But they do get plenty of fresh grass, bugs, sunshine, and garden vegetables.
In the garden, we still adhere to the sustainable practices. Our plants are chemical-free and pesticide-free. We fertilize with compost and manure from our cows. The soil around the vegetables are topped with wood chips. This decomposes and sends nutrients back into the ground to nourish the plants. For pest control, we remove them manually-my back can testify to that-and diatomaceous earth.
